Grae Violett
  • About
  • Grae Violett (she/they) is a singer-songwriter and poet based in Seattle. She got into writing from a young age as a way to work through complex emotions and find connection with others. When asked to describe their art, they would say that it's a literary/musical portrait of an overthinking empath. As a Black Queer Fem, she hopes that underrepresented people can find safety and belonging in her work. When not writing, you can find her having one-person dance parties in their room, drinking copious amounts of tea, or indecisively perusing thrift stores.

Biography

Hey loves! I’m Grae Violett (She/They) and I’m a black queer singer/songwriter and spoken word poet from Seattle!

Growing up, I always felt too much. My emotions themselves were a lot to handle, so I would translate those complexities into art. Words and song literally saved my life, and now here I am, making music for all the overthinking empaths out there.

I don’t believe in genres, but I grew up listening to 90s rnb and 80s synth pop, and Serena Isioma , SZA and Chase Atlantic currently have my heart now, so I hope that gives you an idea of what you’ll be getting into by listening to me. In this house the Arts are intersectional, so most of my songs will be accompanied by a spoken word piece that adds more context to the story.

My art is for everyone, but I really want my black queer sibs who feel too much and think in paragraphs to feel belonging, peace, and maybe a bit of inspiration from what I do. It’s so hard to become what you don’t see, so I really want to show that black queer fems can be alt, can be soft, can be HELLA gay, and take up as much space as they need.

If any of this resonates with you...pour yourself some tea, light some incense, and turn your LEDs to purple. Settle in. You’re so welcome and so loved.
